Developing Tools & Utilities for the Software Asset Management Industry

Third Eye is developing tools & utilities for the Software Asset Management (SAM) industry after officially winning the RFP from TagVault.org - a program by IEEE-ISTO which serves as a forum for all members of the SAM eco-system. This heralds the advent of open standards to the SAM industry.

TagVault.org is a not-for-profit organization formed under the structure of IEEE-ISTO.

TagVault.org is the registration authority for ISO/IEC 19770-2 software identification tags (SWID tags). In addition, it serves as a forum for all members of the SAM eco-system – consumers, publishers, SAM tool and service providers and other interested parties – sharing information and facilitating tools development for better and more accurate SAM license compliance.

Currently, it is very difficult to track and monitor software deployment and usage within enterprise organizations. Publisher provided SAM tools only work for proprietary software and require management overhead – which isn‘t cost effective for customers. Vendors of SAM discovery tools look for forensic evidence of deployment across different software products – but have struggled as there has been no industry-wide standard for software identification. Software installations are not designed to be discovered.

TagVault.org was established to promote software tagging conformance to insure interoperability of tools and applications in software asset management. Its mission is “To be the neutral, not-for-profit software-tag issuer / clearinghouse enabling software publishers, users and service providers to certifiably manage software assets using ISO/IEC 19770-2 compliant services and tools.”

TagVault.org offers unique and standardized software tags which can be used at initial deployment or upon discovery, to enable cost-effective and certifiable inventory management.

TagVault.org serves the industry tagging collaboration as:

  • An entity whereby procedures and technology are in established use, and are independently verified as able to ensure and sustain continued full conformance
  • An entity managing existing tag values that are owned or managed by different organizations and are not modified in anyway such that all information in existing tags (including extended information) is collected and stored in the TagVault Registry. Any new data that’s added will conform to the same standards as those required of the software provider conformance.
  • TagVault.org services will be available to all software publishers, customers and their partners – at minimal membership fees to cover costs

To meet its objectives, TagVault.org has partnered with Third Eye to develop software tools and utilities for TagVault.org and its members.
